Asklepios: Stable business development in the first nine months of 2017

· Organic revenue of EUR 2,425.7 million
· Around 1.68 million patients treated
· Investment of EUR 158.5 million

Asklepios Kliniken Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH has enjoyed a largely stable business performance in the first nine months of the current year. Revenue increased slightly to EUR 2,425.7 million. Consolidated net income amounted to EUR 123.5 million.

Organic growth allowed revenue to expand slightly by 0.8% to EUR 2,425.7 million (9M 2016: EUR 2,407.1 million). The hospitals and medical facilities of the Asklepios Group cared for a total of 1,684,196 patients in the period from January to September 2017 (9M 2016: 1,717,365). EBITDA amounted to EUR 270.9 million in the first nine months of 2017 (9M 2016: EUR 283.7 million). The operating EBITDA margin was 11.2% (9M 2016: 11.8%). The cost of materials ratio decreased to 21.5% in the first nine months of 2017 (9M 2016: 21.8%). The number of employees rose by 0.9% as at 30 September 2016 to 34,932 FTEs (9M 2016: 34,634).

Consolidated net income for the period from January to September 2017 amounted to EUR 123.5 million in total (9M 2016: EUR 140.9 million), corresponding to a return on sales of 5.1% (9M 2016: 5.9%). Earnings were reduced by a mid-eight-figure amount in the first nine months as a result of extraordinary effects in risk provisions caused by changes in the regulatory environment.

“Asklepios’ growth remains steady and stable in a consistently attractive environment,” said Kai Hankeln, CEO of Asklepios. “A sustainable growth path is always a top priority for Asklepios. Within this framework, we intend to further improve our long-term revenue and earnings performance by systematically continuing our strategy of excellence for the benefit of our patients.” Gross investment amounted to EUR 158.5 million in the period under review (9M 2016: EUR 148.5 million), with a share of own funds of 69.7% (9M 2016: 64.3%). “I am proud of the fact that investment in our facilities has risen again,” commented Dr Thomas Wolfram, CEO of Asklepios. “We have increased not just the total volume of our investments, but also the share financed by own funds. This will ensure excellence in the quality of care and treatment in the long term.”

The financial position of the Asklepios Group remains stable. The Group’s net debt amounted to EUR 618.7 million as at 30 September 2017. The ratio of net debt to EBITDA was 1.7. Cash and cash equivalents amounted to EUR 235.6 million and unused credit facilities to EUR 463.1 million as at 30 September 2017. Asklepios therefore has sufficient financial resources to finance its ongoing corporate growth. “The economic stability of Asklepios is based on solid financing. The promissory note loan we issued in November guarantees us not just planning security, but also harmonises our maturity profile,” explained Hafid Rifi, CFO of Asklepios.
