Tumor surgery (Light microscopy, plastic surgery, free tissue transfer)

Small skin lesions are removed and the defect closed by suture, or by operating on the surrounding areas to assist in the closure of larger areas. The correct diagnosis of a wide range of lesions is assisted by the use of a special technique of light microscopy.

Malignant tumours of the mouth and throat are treated by 4 weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After a period of approximately 2 weeks, patients are operated to remove and reconstruct the defect left by the resection. The intention is to restore perfect function of chewing, swallowing and speech, and to this end, the spectrum of plastic and microvascular surgery is available to the patient.

Congenital anomalies (cleft lip and palate, craniostenosis)

abb-05
Both adults and children with a range of anomalies are treated in our department. We treat cleft lip and palate patients in association with a nurse specialised in breastfeeding and lactation, and Ear-, Nose- and Throat colleagues. Speech therapy and the Department of Paediatrics are additionally helpful in creating a Department perfectly tailored to meet the needs of these very special patients. Treatment concepts have been developed in conjunction with these, and are organised and executed after consultation with all the relevant parties. Our younger patients are accommodated with either of their parents in the Paediatric ward. The duration of stay is kept as short as possible, and surgery is performed exclusively under the microscope and with the most modern anaesthetic techniques. Craniostenosis are treated in cooperation with the Dep. of Neurosurgery (PD Dr. P. Kremer).

Other activities

We have built up a close working relationship with the Padhar Hospital, an evangelical mission hospital with 250 beds. This association dates back to 1976 (Professor Thomas Kreusch), and for the last 6 years, we have been paying annual visits together with Prof. Dr. Dr. J.-Th. Lambrecht from the Dental Institute in Basel, Switzerland. Children and adults are operated with cleft lips and palates are operated on without remuneration. Ten visits have resulted in 754 children and young adults being operated. These patients have no access to funds in order to finance their surgery, and frequently were not aware of any available treatment. We have formed the Friends of Padhar Germany e.V. in order to finance the project, which more recently has assisted in the training of local surgeons in the most up to date techniques.
